Abstract

The objective of the study was to present a synthesis of knowledge about the effects of bariatric surgery on body image in adults. A systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA-2020 criteria. The protocol was registered in INPLASY. The search for articles was carried out until March 16, 2023. 18 studies were included for the systematic review, of these 6 were included in the meta-analysis. RevMan software version 5.4.20 was used. The effect size was estimated through mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) and any score of p<0.05 was determined statistically significantly. Bariatric surgery reduces concern about shape (MD=  1.81, 95% CI, -2.23, -1.40, p=0.00001), concern about weight (MD= -1.75, 95% CI, -2.28, -1.22, p= 0.00001), body image dissatisfaction (MD= -43.74, 95% CI, -53.87, -33.62, p=0.00001), and increased self-esteem (MD-0.51, 95% CI, -0.85, -0.18, p=0.003). 19 instruments were found to evaluate body image and the application times range between 1 day and 8 years after surgery. It is suggested to standardize these aspects and report the findings stratified by sex.
