Abstract

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is the excessive preoccupation with healthy eating that involves feelings of guilt for non-compliance with self-imposed dietary rules, dietary restraint, and global impairment. Most studies have looked for associations between ON and eating problems or obsessive-compulsive traits, however, there are no studies linking orthorexia nervosa with other pathologies such as addiction. The aim of this research is to evaluate the existing evidence on the relationship between ON and addiction. For this purpose, a systematic review of empirical studies is carried out, performing a search in different databases. The focus is on empirical studies published from 2013 onwards. The concepts orthorexia and addiction were addressed in Spanish and English. The systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA 2009 method. The results show an association between orthorexia nervosa and behavioral addictions. The main findings allow knowing that there is an association between predisposing and/or maintaining variables of orthorexia and addictions which are perfectionism, body dissatisfaction, emotional dyscontrol and food restriction. Knowing that orthorexia nervosa and behavioral addictions share certain clinical factors allows us to focus both on their prevention and on the development of transdiagnostic treatments
