Abstract

Responsive feeding is key in the implementation of healthy feeding practices in infants since it strengthens their self-regulation and adequate weight development. However, it has been little explored in the Mexican context. The objective of this research was to describe the practice of perceptual feeding in mothers of infants under 6 months of age in Mexico and to explore the relationship with sociodemographic variables. A cross-sectional study was designed with 197 mothers of infants under 6 months of age. The Feeding Practices and Structure Questionnaire for young infants was used, which assesses two dimensions of perceptual feeding practices (demand and directed) and two non-perceptual (calming, persuasive). Demand feeding was moderately used and was related to economic income, exclusive breastfeeding, and infant age. Calming feeding was the second most used, was related to infant age, formula feeding, and mother's occupation. These results emphasize the need to apply educational strategies to mothers with breastfeeding children in addition to the identification of hunger and satiety cues, calming techniques, adjusted to the baby's temperament to support them in promoting perceptive practices with their children.
